There are a variety of cities in America that are well-known for being home to some of the world’s top fashion houses. Cities such as New York and Los Angeles have truly put America on the map, and remain every bit as important today as they ever were in regards to fashion and style. However, many people fail to recognize that there are a number of cities in America that are highly fashionable and under the radar at the same time. Charleston, South Carolina is just one of these stylish cities that is redefining itself as a blossoming capital of style and panache. Charleston has been voted the third most promising city for fashion in America.

A huge part of the aesthetic in Charleston comes down to incorporating color and accessories into their southern style. Charleston can be notoriously hot in the summers and lightweight accessories are a duality of form and function. The one thing that resonated louder than any other trend was the number of dapper self tied bow ties and uniquely patterned handkerchiefs we saw. Charleston is not afraid to accessorize with bright colors, reinvented patterns and dapper details.

For whatever reason, preppy attire happens to be exceptionally popular in the South, and Charleston, South Carolina is no exception. Polo shirts, inky chinos and boat shoes are all over the place in Charleston and given the fact that this look has been exceptionally popular all throughout the country in recent years, it makes sense that so many people embrace it in Charleston. As with the suits, preppy attire tends to be punchy in color mixing navy blues with reds and khakis. Charleston men like to mix and match their suit jackets and pants. Most suits we saw involved a navy blazer and khaki hued trousers.


What to Wear When Visiting

If you’re going to visit Charleston, break out your accessories and prepare to incorporate some color. When dressing formally, go with a navy suit jacket and light colored trousers for the best Charleston mix. You can dress down your look by taking the preppy approach; think khakis, a fitted polo and a pair of designer oxfords. Charleston puts a strong emphasis on uber stylish mens shoes as well as though out accessories. When in Charleston, dress with a preppy edge that is perfectly accessorized.
