The Different Shades of Brown:

Brown is made by mixing all primary colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta) as well as adding a touch of black. The more black is added the darker the brown will be. Good examples here are Bistre-brown, seal-brown, and auburn. If you add white instead of black you get the more creamy looking browns such as tan, beige, wheat, khaki and buff-brown. If you are looking for these color shades you may also want to have a look at our selection of Cream, Champagne, Ivory Ties - our selection of classic wedding neckties.

Adding a larger portion of red to the mix obviously gives the brown a more reddish look. Good examples here are rust, mahogany, and burnt-umber. Adding more red eventually creates a shade of burgundy or maroon. If this is the color you have been looking for then please visit our collection of Burgundy Ties. Adding just a hint more yellow gives the brown a lighter, and more summer time touch. Good examples here are light shades of bronze as well as buff-brown.

Please note that all ties listed above are in regular length. Although these normal length ties will be the right fit for a vast majority of men, we also feature many of our brown ties in XL length – especially for the big & tall. To see our selection of XL ties we invite you to visit our Extra Long Ties category page.

When to Wear and How to Match Brown Ties:

As with most colors, choose lighter color shade on ties for the spring and summer months. Good examples here are tans, beige, wheat, and khaki. The more classic browns such as auburn and cholocate are best suited for the fall an dwinter months. Classic fall colors for brownish ties are the ones with a touch more red. Colors such as rust-brown and remind of turning leafes – a perfect color on ties worn during this time of the year.

Matching brown to shirts and suits is actually quite easy. As a general rule, matching browns with true blacks is difficult and should be avoided. For example: choose brown footwear and belt over black when wearing brown ties. The same is true for shirts and suits. You are best of avoiding shades of gray, charcoal, and black on your suits and instead choose suits in navy, olive, tan, and brown.

The Psychology and Meaning of Brown:

Brown is an earthy and natural color that is found in living and non-living things in nature. Brown is often times associated with maturity, steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, dependability, and health. UPS for example uses brown to emphasize the dependability of their service.

In business brown is less common the gray or shades of blue. Nevertheless, wearing a tan or light beige colored suit with brown shoes and belt is a great outfit for the warmer days. The most “earthy” combination is browns with green. Wearing an olive-green suit with tan dress shirt and auburn-brown tie is a classic example.
