Suit Care - Tips for Storing and Cleaning a Mens Suit

Knowing how to properly care for your suit is important for many reasons. First of all, suits can be quite costly and knowing how to care for them will ensure that your investment will last much longer. Secondly, suits are typically worn for business. A nice looking suit will create a positive first impression that can only help your career. Read the tips below on how to store and clean your suits.

Hangers
Suits should be placed on a hanger to ensure that they keep their shape. Avoid hanging your suit at the back of a chair and never drive your car or fly with your suit jacket on. Not any hanger will do. Best are suit hangers that have a wider shoulder area (at least 2 inches) and ones that are made from cedar wood. Cedar has a pleasant scent for us humans but is hated by fabric eating moths.

Fresh Air
Give your suit a break after each day you wear it. For daily suit wearers it is recommended to have at least three suits. Alternate your suits and allow the fabric to breathe. Suit makers recommend that the suit is hung onto a hanger and placed in a well ventilated and shaded area.

Dry-cleaning
Suit can not be machine washed but need to be given to a dry-cleaner. Only dry-clean your suits when absolutely necessary. Harsh chemicals used in the cleaning process can damage the fabric and might cause the colors to fade slightly. If you hang your suit onto a hanger and alternate between your suits, then you can go at least 5 or 6 times with one suit before it has to be give to the dry-cleaner. Also, make sure to give both, suit and matching pants, to the cleaner to ensure that the colors will fade equally.

Steaming
If you wear a suit each day, then you may want to consider buying a steam-cleaner. Steaming your pants and jacket will take out wrinkles and creases, and will be much easier on the fabrics and colors than the harsher dry-cleaning procedure.
