Finding the Right Length Pants for a Mens Suit

When shopping for a mens suit you need to remember that it a process that will involve some time. Simply going to a store and picking up a perfect fitting suit does not happen and you should take at least an hour at a mens retailer to find what you are looking for. Once you have decided on colors, patterns, and cut, you will need to find the right size.

First, you will need to find a fitting jacket. What matters here is that the jackets fits in your shoulder area. Things like sleeve length can be adjusted easily for little money. Next, find the right fitting trousers. By fit we mean the right fit at your waist. Just like the sleeve length on your jacket, the trousers are altered to have the proper length.

What Length is Right
There is no exact rule on how long the trousers should be. As a general rule: You want the trousers to cover all of the socks and ankles when walking but without extending over the shoe heels so that the cuffs touch the ground. When seated some sock should be visible, but never any bare legs. Therefore, socks should always be pulled up. Athletic ankle socks are never acceptable in business - even if the colors are black, gray, or navy.

Cuffs or No Cuffs?
This is a question of personal preference. Modern suits, especially short label 3-button suits, are usually worn without cuffs on the trousers. More classic-conservative styles on the other hand do show a cuff on the trousers. Once again, the style you choose is personal preference. Keep in mind however that pleated pants should always be worn with a cuffed bottom while straight-cut pants look nice with or without cuffs.
