Neck ties and leather brogues might be timeless staples of men’s fashion, but it’s a whole other ball game once you’re at the beach. Sand and surf aren’t exactly conducive for suits and briefcases, but the setting is a perfect opportunity to show off a whole other side to your style. How beach-ready is your summer wardrobe?

Smart Surf Shorts
The term ‘beach shorts’ is most often associated with frivolous floral patterns and garish colors, the kind popular with the teenage surfer set. The adult men’s market hawks a very different kind of beach short, one that you’ll definitely want to get.

‘Beach shorts’ for men over 20 mean quick-drying shorts that look like shorter versions of their chino equivalents. They look like they’re tailored, and typically have colors like black, navy or khaki. On top of simply looking more sophisticated and grown-up, these shorts have the added advantage of looking smart enough for walking around. It reduces the need to keep changing between beach, boardwalk and hotel room, at least.

Think Tank
Popular perception limits tank tops to ripped, protein-inhaling gym-goers who want to show off their musculature. At the beach, however, tank tops are fair game. With the heat and moisture all around you, a tank top is a choice that’s equally practical and sartorial.

The only requirement is that you pick a tank that matches your level of maturity, which is to say plain and unadorned. Stripes and subtle graphics are about the limit of the rule; any wilder – an in-your-face statement, say – will look borrowed from a teen nephew. Get one that’s really in your size, no matter how built and beach-ready your torso is. Too tight tank tops always screams “trying too hard”, and won’t do you any favors in the end.

Because you’re showing much more skin than usual, be sure to pay proper attention to your grooming and hygiene along the areas that will be visible. It doesn’t have to be as clean and flawless as an underwear ad, but you do want to at least be presentable.

Wearing Your Stripes
The combo of summer and the beach is the perfect reason to bring out all styles nautical, and few things are as visually reminiscent of the theme as stripes. Slim horizontal stripes in some bold color channels a feel that’s both East Coast elegance and Mediterranean adventure. Either way, it’s about as nautical as summer fashion can get.

Nautical stripes were something of a style trend last spring, but the way it’s done for the summer is slightly different. Because of the much warmer temperature, you’re looking at cotton tees and extremely light knits – probably open at the neck – to be more appropriate for the weather. Remember that, as good as the wares of men’s fashion are, the industry always puts practicality before aesthetics.

Knits will always be layering pieces, but you don’t always have to wear them that way, especially to the beach. You could pull them on without a tee underneath, especially if it’s for that quick trip between beach and hotel. There’s only one quick rule for men’s fashion at the beach: don’t wear it if it’s not comfortable.

Beach style fore men is hardly a complicated affair. You’ll want to look for high-style but low-maintenance pieces that won’t get damaged by sand, salt water or the occasional ice cream incident. Top that off with some sunscreen, and you’re all set to go.
